The picturesque seaside resort Tisno with its 1300 inhabitants is situated in northern Dalmatia 27 kilometers northwest of Sibenik and is connected to the island of Murter by a flap bridge across the strait at Tisno centre. It swings open twice or three times a day to let yachts pass through. From Munich Tisno can be reached by car via the motorway in about eight hours. The airport of Split is only 60 kilometers away.
Tisno´s history goes back to Roman times and the remnants of a Roman villa can still be seen today. The place was first mentioned in 1474 during the Turkish invasion when people were looking for shelter in this region. In the 18th century rich families from Italy moved to Tisno and their grand and noble palaces and villas like the Villa Kaleb and Mazzuro can still be visited today. Worth seeing is also the church of Our Lady of Carravaggio which was built by the Italian family of Gelpsi at the beginning of the 18th century. Every year on May 26th numerous pilgrims from the neighbouring places gather here to celebrate the anniversary.
Tisno is also famous for its techno festivals like the Love International Festival during the summer put on by the Garden organization. The Garden Site has its own beach and is sufficiently far away from Tisno centre so that the partying and raving can continue into the early hours without disturbing other guests and inhabitants.
Tisno offers lots of free time and sports activities like shoreline strolls, cycling and hiking, diving and snorkeling, sailing and boat trips. In the marinas you can also rent a boat and make a trip to the Kornati archipelago, a national park since 1980 and a spectacular place for scuba diving in clear waters and a relatively untouched ecology.
The best of Tisno´s beaches are Jazina, a shallow gravel bay 2kilometere west of the bridge and Jezero, beside the campsite of the same name.
Murter belongs to Dalmatia`s most calm and laidback islands with an unspoiled surrounding countryside and a sea with crystal clear water. Its centre of Murter Town, a small settlement of mainly stone houses and only a few hotels is the main starting point for boat trips to the Kornati islands. At the seafront jetties and boathouses jut out from each household traditionally home to the fishermen and sheep farmers who owned land on the Kornati islands. The oldest part of the small town with its picturesque alleys is situated on a hill and worth a visit. The attractive gravel Slanica Bay famous for its spectacular sunset over the Kornati and the less crowded Cigrada Bay as well as several rocky bathing areas are only a few minutes´ walk away from the town.
