Krk, the largest island in Croatia, is situated in the northern Adriatic Sea in the Kvarner Bay near Rijeka, whose airport is located on it (Omisalj). With an area of 405.80 square kilometres and a population of 19.383 it is also the most developed island of Croatia. The main settlements are the historic Krk Town and Baska, a scenic fishing village and tourist resort with a spectacular sandy beach. Whereas both of them are more overcrowded places from the end of June till the middle of September there are plenty of quieter settlements to find all over this gorgeous island, notably Vrbnik, the wine-making centre or the smaller Malinska - here you can find a large selection of new properties.
Krk Town is the island`s picturesque main centre and with its narrow and cobbled lanes and its partly walled city it invites you to stroll around or have a cup of coffee or a soft drink in one of the small and cosy cafes. The main attraction is the Trg Bana Jelacica, an open square outside the town walls, from where you can have a look at the busy little harbour. If you want you can visit historic sights like the hexagonal guard tower of thirteenth century vintage with the Roman gravestone and carved-relief portrais of the deceased. One of the most charming attractions, The Roman Mosaic, a third-century fragment showing colourful scenes of sea beasts can be reached through Cafe Bar Mate. Worth a visit is also the Maritime Collection, an exhibition of many creations of model-ships and nautical equipments. The Romanesque Cathedral of the Assumption as well as St Quirinus`s Church offer a place of peace and rest to its visitors.
